Credit Point System

Welcome to IDA'S Continuing Oral & Dental Education (CODE). We are proud to offer a CODE programme tailored specifically to meet the needs of all dental professionals. You will find our courses not only an excellent means of renewing knowledge but also friendships and professional networks.

IDA's CODE courses provide high level, accredited continuing professional development that will help them to get the knowledge and skills to be a successful leader in the dental profession. Our programme includes nationally recognised presenters and a number of practical courses that encourage active, hands on participation.

Various emerging dental subjects of importance such as dental imaging technology like cone beam 3D imaging, implantology, laser technology etc., are being offered so that the benefits derived from such programmes can be successfully integrated and applied into their treatment planning and practice.

Types of CODE Programmes

  • Lectures - Lecture can be in a presentation software viz power point, keynote, etc.
  • Lecture cum demonstration - Demonstration can be on typodont teeth or extract teeth
  • Live demonstration on patients - will be only done by registered dental surgeons.
  • Simulation training (with lecture).
  • Video conferencing.
  • Webinar.
  • Any hands-on activity for skill enhancement.
  • Any other mode which impart, improve, enhance, accentuate and advance knowledge and skill of the professionals as may be prescribed and accepted by the CODE committee from the time to time.

Calculation and assigning of credit points must be done as follows:

  • Credit must be awarded on the basis of contact hours. No credit for courses of less than one hour in duration.
  • For audio / visual self instructional programmes, individuals should receive credit equivalent to the instructional time of the programmes for a minimum of one hour of credit.
  • Individuals who complete written self instructional programmes should receive a minimum of one hour of credit.
  • For CODE onsite or in-office participation components, credit must be based on contact hours.
  • For electronically mediated CODE, the provider must demonstrate a rationale for establishing credit hours to be awarded based on the duration, nature and quantity of information provided. Such courses should have a duration of minimum two hours for one credit point.

Credit Allocation:

  • Dentist are expected to complete 30 hours worth of credit points per year.
  • On completion of the 30 points- Dentists are provided with a white certificate.
  • On completion of 60 points- Dentists are awarded with a silver certificate.
  • On completion of 90 points- Dentists are awarded with gold certificate.
  • On completion of 120 points- Dentists are awarded with platinum certificate.
  • On completion of 150 points- Dentists are awarded with a Fellowship certificate.

Credit is awarded based on the actual number of contact hours (excluding breaks, meals, and registration periods) in case of formal structured lectures as under:

  • A full day lectures- 6 credit hours
  • Half day lecture - 3 credit hours
  • One hour lecture -1 credit hour
  • No credit is awarded, if the course is for less than 1 hour.
  • CODE credits are also allocated for self instruction from journals (e.g.JIDA / Clinical Dentistry).
  • Credit is allocated to four articles in each issue of the Journal as CODE vehicle with questions / online test form.
  • If 3 out of 4 questions are correctly answered per article CODE Credits of 0.5 hours per article and a maximum total of 2 credit points for each issue are awarded.

The overall recommendations are as under:

  • Registration renewals based on credit hours earned after every 5 years
  • Total credit hours required for renewal 150 hours with minimum of 30 hours per year
  • Approved Course Providers conducting CODE with approved and recognized faculty with pre- approved course content.
  • Records to be maintained by dentists to be produced during renewal. Facility for random audits (sworn statements, affidavits, statement of compliance) by regulatory authority.

CODE points also allocated for original publications in Peer Reviewed Journals and for writing text books. All indexed journals published in India to have CODE content with questionnaires.

Participants should be given an opportunity to evaluate all CODE activities to provide feedback to CODE planners. Questionnaires for this purpose should allow participants to rate aspects of the CODE event such as

  • Achievement of the educational objectives.
  • Content coverage and extent of knowledge imparted.
  • Usefulness and relevance of the information given.
  • Skills of the presenter.
  • Sustainability of the venue.
